Drills and Tips

3 V 1 in a Grid

Start by playing Keep-Away in a small 10 x 10 grid. Start with the defender walking, then progress to half speed and finally full speed.

Points to remember:

  1. There should be lots of movement.
  2. Player making the pass supports the pass.
  3. Player not receiving the pass must move quickly through the space behind the defender.
  4. Emphasize proper supporting distances and proper angles.

3 V 1 To Goal

Start with no offsides.

  1. Player X2 must move aggressively towards O to make him commit, then passes off to Player X1 or X3.
  2. Defender O attacks the player with the ball.
  3. Player X1 can shoot to goal. Player X3 continues to the far post.

3 V 1 Overlap

Start with no offsides.

  1. X2 plays an early ball to X3.
  2. X3 dribbles the ball toward the middle to commit O, while X2 runs round the back of X3.
  3. X3 has three options: X3 may take the ball to goal, pass to X1 or pass to the overlapping X2. (X3 makes the decision after seeing the reactions of O).
Note that:
  • The overlap must develop early to provide enough space for the players.
  • Flank players must take the ball in toward the defender and commit the defender. By taking the ball to the middle, space is created down the flanks.
